A client needs to do some maintenance on his house by having
a
window frame refurbished by cleaning and protected it from rust,
and repainted. The client
also mentioned that the putty has hardened and became brittle and
does not properly seal the
glass and frame against water and rain. The client wants the
refurbished and painted window
frame to last for 8-10 years before it needs maintenance again as
this is the typical time period
that suppliers of paint, such as Plascon and Dulux guarantee their
products. A picture of the
windows frame is indicated in Figure 3.
Project Response: Please do the following in developing a project
response towards
ensuring quality of the refurbishing project
1. Identify the important steps for doing the refurbishment project
and identify specific
measurement and hold points at different stages of the work
2. Develop a specification including quality metrics (quality
criteria, tolerances, methods and
responsibilities) for the important refurbishing steps of the
above-mentioned window frame
in order to adhere to the client’s expectations.
1& 2. The important steps in the project here are keeping in mind the quality metrics here are:
* Removing the original window frame without damaging the wall or any other thing nearby.
* The old putty also has to be removed, so that new putty can be applied when installing the frame again.
* Second step would be to remove the rust from the frame and then check if that brings a change to the size of the frame or not. Sometimes, when rust is removed by rubbing the iron, after that the frame doesn't fit perfectly, so it becomes important to keep track of measurements.
* After the rust is removed, the iron frame is polished and painted with the best available paints like dulux, so that the durability is optimal.
* Once the work on the frame is completed, it is then put on the wall again with new putty being used. This will help fit in the frame perfectly well.
* Finally, after the window frame is installed, it needs to stay untouched and unpressurised for a couple of hours, for the putty to settle.
* Another important thing here is to use the best quality of putty so that tolerence level is high.
