Question

can someone help me with this physics Lab Vibrating String Experiment I'm confused please and thank you

Vibrating String Experiment Objective To study the factors affecting the velocity of waves in a stretched string. Apparatus LPart D Put the single string back and hang 200 g on the hook. Set the frequency to about 70 Hz, and move the motor/clamp asse

Answer #1

Part D.
given
hangign mass, m = 200 g

from the four runs the data is
Run 1 : l1 = 1.42 m,
Run 2 : l2 = 1.3 m,
Run 3 : l3 = 1.1 m
Run 4 : l4 = 0.9 m

Now, 1/mu is 1/l
so we plot f vs (1/mu) (f on y axis and 1/mu on x axis)
the data table is

1/mu f
0.704225 70
0.769231 80
0.909091 90
1.111111 100

the plot is under

f y = 69.948x + 23.906 R2 = 0.9517 120 100 80 60 40 20 0 0 0.2 0.4 0.6 0.8 1 1.2

From the plot, slope is 69.948
now, speed of wave on a string is
c = sqrt(T/mu)
T = 200g * 9.81 m/s/s * 0.001 kg/g
T = 1.962 N
mu = 0.44 g / m
so,
c = 66.77642480 m/s

% error in theoretical and experimental value is
(69.948 - 66.776)*100/66.776 = 4.75020965616389121 %
