What type of stimulation causes the withdrawal response in the Aplysia?

Aplysia is a marine organism which is an example of defensive withdrawal reflex.The reflex is learned through classical conditioning where a stimulus is generally paired with a stronger unpleasant stimulus to create the withdrawal response. This unpleasant stimulus can be an electric shock.

What stimulation causes habituation What causes sensitization?Describe the underlying cellular/molecular changes that accompany sensitization and habituation in Aplysia.

Habituation is a process when an organism learn not to respond to a stimulus which is repetitive in nature.In the case of aplysia , the withdrawal reflex in stances of weak to moderate tactile stimulation causes the habituation as these stimulations are not intense and quite repetitive.During habituation process, less number of neurotransmitters are released in the neuron synapse.

Sensitization is caused when a reaction towards a stimulus become intensified by repeated exposure.The increased reaction are related to the serotonin release by motor neurons. And this in turn release glutamate from the sensory neuron.This entire process causes sensitization in aplysia.
