Question
A biologist is comparing the growth of a population of flies per week to the number of flies in Guana will consume for week he has devised equation to solve for which day (x) the iguana would be able to eat the entire population the equation is 4^x=5x+ 3

explain to the biologist how we can solve this on a graph using a system of equations

Answer #1

We can plot both the functions on a graph as f(x)=(4^x) and g(x)=(5x+3). And from the graph it is clear that initially f(x) is lower than g(x) then it will corss g(x) somewhere then f(x) will always be greater han g(x) as exponential functions are greater than linear functions for higher x values.

And by try and error we get f(1)<g(1) but f(2)>g(2).

Thus at x=2 that is at 2nd day it will eat the entire population.
