Chapter 13 – Employee Benefits

Carter Cleaning Centers, a chain of ten dry cleaning centers, has traditionally provided only legislatively required benefits for its employees. Jack’s (the owner of Carter Cleaning Centers) daughter just recently graduated from FGCU with a degree in business administration with a management major and HRM concentration. Jack has asked Jennifer to examine and make recommendations regarding the benefits Carter Cleaning Services provides to its employees and if there is a case to be made to offer additional benefits.

Jennifer knows that turnover is a current problem. She wonders if providing greater employee benefits would reduce employee turnover. She knows that if Carter Cleaning Services was to add new benefits that salaries would have to be reduced to offset some of these new benefit expenses.

a.) Let us discuss below 3 incentive plans and also compare them:

1. Profit sharing incentive Plan:

This plan is mostly used by companies where targets are set for employees. When the company gains profit as a result of targets being achieved by employees, the company pays a percentage of profit to the employees as an incentive. THis model works really well in competitive environments like sales and marketing, wherein pushing the employees can result in more business, and also employees feel motivated to achieve their targets to earn more money.

2. We pay if you stay:

This is like a loyalty bonus. This incentive plan works really well for industries which are competitive and a lot of employee attrition is seen. The companies in order to make the employees stay so that their training efforts on them are not wasted, offer incentives after every fixed duration of their stay with the company. This helps the companies stay stable and spend less on hiring new employees each time an old well trained resource goes away.

3. Training and Career development:

This works really well with companies where research and development work is carried out, or with universities and colleges, where employees readily strive to become better and gain more knowledge and education in the form of certifications and training. The companies keep the employees motivated by paying for their training and development, so that they can implement advanced skills with the same company.

b.) FGCU should use" training and Career development " as the incentive strategy, as the faculty includes teachers, lecturers, research individuals who always strive to gain more knowledge and would love to stay with an organization who will understand this and promotes their career development along with regular pay to repay the services they give to the University. This would always keep them motivated and attached to the University.

c.) However, for maintenance workers `` Cash bonus" would be a perfect way of giving incentives. The maintenance workers can be paid once a year or on special occasions a little extra cash as bonus, for motivating them and incentive in return to their hard work and services. The reason for this choice is that, employee retention is not a major concern when talking about maintenance workers.
