a. The alternative hypothesis for why bacteria didn't grow might be that in the antibiotic resistance gene there may be a gene inserted which inactivated the antibiotic resistance gene.

b. To experiment this hypothesis, we can seqeuence the antibiotic resistance gene and check where the mutation has occurred or another gene was inserted.
