Answer #1

Ventilation-perfusion coupling is nothing but matching alveolar ventilation with overall blood circulation which actually varies throughout the lungs. There are high Ventilation/perfusion ratio areas and there are low Ventilation/perfusion ratio areas and there is everything in between. Vasoconstriction due to hypoxia eventually reroutes the pulmonary blood flow from poorly ventilated areas of the lungs to well-ventilated areas for more efficient gas exchange. The perfusion or the blood flow to respective regions of the lungs coordinates accurately with the area of ventilation to air sacs in that region.

The Ventilation-perfusion coupling helps to stop blood to go into poorly ventilated regions of the lungs as the Local vasoconstrictors are stimulated in such a way that they direct the blood to flow inside the better-ventilated regions of the lung where it can pick up more oxygen.
