1)

Load of Assembly station = 100*10+200*5 = 2000 minutes

Load of Machine 1 = 100*7+200*8+2*240 = 2780 minutes

Load of Machine 2 = 100*5+200*(5+3)+2*30 = 2160 minutes

Load of Machine 3 = 100*22+200*0+90 = 2290 minutes

Load of Machine 4 = 100*10+200*10+60 = 3060 minutes

Load of Machine 4 is the highest. therefore, Machine 4 is the system constraint.

.

2)

Contribution margin of product X per minute of bottleneck time = (3000-500-500)/10 = $ 200

Contribution margin of product Y per minute of bottleneck time = (2000-500-100)/10 = $ 140

Production of products is prioritized in order of their contribution margin per minute of bottleneck time.

Therefore, product X is given first priority

Time available on bottleneck machine 4 after fulfilling demand of product X = 2400 - (100*10) - 60 = 1340 minutes

Quantity of product Y that can be produced in remaining time = 1340/10 = 134

Optimal product mix is:

Product X = 100 / wk

Product Y = 134 / wk

.

3)

Profit generated by the optimal product mix = 100*(3000-500-500)+134*(2000-500-100)-15000

= $ 372,600

.

4)

Utilization of each resource = Load / Capacity

Utilization of Assembly station = (100*10+134*5)/2400 = 69.6 %

Utilization of Machine 1 = (100*7+134*8+2*240)/2400 = 93.8 %

Utilization of Machine 2 = (100*5+134*(5+3)+2*30)/2400 = 68.0 %

Utilization of Machine 3 = (100*22+134*0+90)/2400 = 95.4 %

Utilization of Machine 4 = (100*10+134*10+60)/2400 = 100 %

Suppose that 5 components (one unit per product unit) are used in the production of 10 products according to the following schedule. The unit assembly cost of each product is a function of the component used: $9, $4, $6, $5, and $8 for components 1 through 5, respectively. The maximum demand for any of the products is 300 units. Use AMPL to determine the optimal product mix that minimizes the installation cost. Do not use the longhand format. Submit your...

Determining the optimal Product Mix with One Constrained Resource Comfy Fit Company manufactures two types of university sweatshirts, the Swoop and the Rufus, with unit contribution margins of $4 and $15, respectively. Regardless of type, each sweatshirt must be fed through a stitching machine to affix the appropriate university logo. The firm leases seven machines that each provides 1,000 hours of machine time per year. Each Swoop sweatshirt requires 6 minutes of machine time, and each Rufus sweatshirt requires 30...

*2. In Example 4.3-2, suppose that TOYCO is studying the possibility of introducing a fourth toy: fire trucks. The assembly does not make use of operation 1. Its unit assembly times on operations 2 and 3 are 1 and 3 minutes, respectively. The revenue per unit is $4. Would you advise TOYCO to introduce the new product? Example 4.3-2 TOYCO assembles three types of toys: trains, trucks, and cars, using three operations. Available assembly times for the three operations are...

A "product mix" problem can be solved quite easily by hand, as long as there is only one constraint (i.e. one resource in which demand > capacity). However, when there are multiple constraints it becomes quite complex. In the lab, we used Solver to find the product mix that results in the highest profit, subject to capacity constraints for each resource, and the constraint that we would not make more than the demand for any given product. Set up a...
