Organizations need to recognize that if strong, healthy work relationships are to be built and maintained, development of emotional intelligence competencies in their people is critical. This is especially important considering the argument that the rise of technology leads to the decline of face-to-face interpersonal experiences and skills.

1. Make a list of the five to eight Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) that you rely on the most in order of importance to your day-to-day functioning.

What value does this communication technology add to my life?

• If I were not using this ICT, how else could I send and receive information.

• What can I do to improve self-awareness and relationship management through ICTs?

• What do I gain in interpersonal communication from ICTs and what do I lose?

I am listing the three ways these ICT helps in promoting emotional intelligence:

1. E-mail: Self-awareness as what I am writing, Awareness about others as what they are writing to me, Context of the email communication.
2. Organization’s Intranet for within company communication: Self-awareness as what I am posting, Awareness about others what they are posting, and knowing what is happening in their professional life.
3. Telecommunication through mobile and telephones: By interacting with colleagues directly, Immediately receiving the feedback over the phone and the tone in which they are talking.
4. Social Media, Websites: Self-awareness as what I am posting, Awareness about others what they are posting, and by knowing what is happening in their personal life.
5. IoT devices like sensors and telematics: These devices are used to understand the behaviors of the people and these behaviors gives the clue about their personality trait and we can derive the attitude from these.

Below are the way how does it hinders the development of emotional intelligence:

1. E-mail: Lack of in-person contact, Lack of information on the condition of the person or the state of mind, and the time lag between the responses.
2. Organization’s Intranet: Lack of free access, Lack of privacy of information being shared, or the state of mind and time lag between the responses.
3. Telecommunication through mobile and telephones: Lack of in-person contact, Lack of information on the condition of the person or the state of mind, and lack of contextual understanding.
4. Social Media & Websites: Lack of in-person contact, Lack of information on the condition of the person or the state of mind, and the time lag between the responses.
5. IoT devices like sensors and telematics: privacy concerns, data security concerns, and accessibility.
