During isolation of b-carotene, if some of the sodium sulfate spilled over into the round bottom flask during decantation, how would that have affected the separation during column chromatography?

ANSWER

  • If some of the sodium sulfates spilled over into the round bottom flask during decantation it helps to dry the organic solvent easily, as sodium sulfates are a good drying agent,
  • ie, sodium sulfates reduce the loss of chemical constituents such as B-carotene from organic solvents.
  • so, when doing a column chromatography for separation of b-carotene , presence of drying agent sodium sulfate helps to persist more b-carotene in the column. thereby increase the isolation of b-carotene during column chromatography.
