The genomic imprinted is removed during the germ cell development and is only maintained by the somatic cells during the mitotic cell division. The process of DNA methylation is important for the genomic imprinting. For a cell to have imprinting it must inherit the parents imprinted genome to fully express the imprinting. A cell having two maternal genomes can develop normally with a small trophoblast and yolk sac.
