Question

A Cavendish apparatus is shown in in the figure below. You can estimate the angle of rotation of the rod in the following way. Assume that the rod is massless, that there is no resistance to rotation, and that the same force acts on both masses. Then the acceleration of each mass may be computed independently, using Newton's second law. Furthermore, if the distance each mass moves is small compared with the separation between m and M, then the acceleration can be treated as constant. (Take m = 53.0 g and M = 2.17 kg.)

Answer #1

r = 0.05 m

R = 0.06 m

F = GmM/r^2

net torque = 2*R*F

but net troque = I*alpha

I = 2*m*R^2

alpha = a/R

2*R*F = 2*m*R^2*a/R

F = m*a

G*m*M/r^2 = m*a

a = GM/r^2 = (6.67*10^-11*2.17)/0.05^2 = 5.78*10^-8 m/s^2

    You see there that depending on the angle of “pull", e, three different motions can occur - the spool either rolls toward or away from the person pulling the cord or, at a critical angle of pull, does not rotate. The purpose of this exercise is to analyze this behavior using fundamental principles of mechanics. The physical system is shown in the figure and consists of two concentric spools of radius R, and R,, respectively. Cord is wrapped around the...
