Answer #1

No one knows how long the COVID-19 outbreak endures. If the advent of spring weather in the northern hemisphere may not get less infectious, anxious people around the globe may have to wait for a vaccine to develop and rolle out. Another major variable is the effectiveness of public-health authorities, which in many countries are considerably less competent than in China.
In any case, closures at factories and suspensions to production are already disrupting global supply chains.

Producers are taking steps to reduce their exposure to vulnerabilities on a long distance. To date, at least, financial analysts have concentrated on cost estimates for different sectors: automakers concerned about parts shortages; clothing factories starved of fabric; luxury-goods stores desperate for customers; and the tourist industry, where cruise ships, in particular, have become contagion hotbeds.

But relatively little thought has been given to what the new climate of uncertainty means more broadly for the global economy. No surprise, the COVID-19 epidemic already plays into the nationalist narratives of today. The Chinese source of the disease will merely reaffirm, to some Americans, the idea that China represents a threat to the world and can not be expected to act responsibly. At the same time, many Chinese will probably see some US action to combat the virus as being racially motivated and intended to block the rise of China. Conspiracy theories are now swirling about the US Central Intelligence Agency that is producing the virus. COVID-19 promises to deliver yet more of a world overflooded by misinformation.
