An environmental economist wished to determine the market demand function for tradable permits in carbon dioxide emissions from experimental data she had collected. Using 11 different values for the price per tonne in dollars (P), the following was estimated:

Q = 5343.9 - 4.681 P

Standard error of the estimate: 321.8 Sum of squares of price: 34695.0

where Q is the number of thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide demanded at the price P.

1. State the direction of the alternative hypothesis used to test that the demand function is downward sloping. Type gt (greater than), ge (greater than or equal to), lt (less than), le (less than or equal to) or ne (not equal to) as appropriate in the box.

2. Use the tables in the textbook to determine the critical value used to conduct the test, assuming a 1% level of significance. If doing a two tail test, state only the positive value to three decimal places.

3. Calculate the test statistic, reporting your answer to two decimal places.

4. Is the null hypothesis rejected for this test? Type yes or no.

5. Disregarding your answer in part 4, if the null hypothesis was not rejected, would the demand curve for tradable permits be downward sloping? Type yes or no.

    A recent study by the World Bank wished to determine whether there was a relationship between the abundance of natural resources in a country and its long term rate of economic growth. Their study used 40 (n) countries over a long period to 1995. Letting Y be the rate of growth measured as a percentage and X be a measure of natural resource abundance, the following relationship between the two variables was estimated. Macarthurs, a manufacturer of ropes used in abseiling, wished to determine whether changing the fibre used in the production of the ropes had affected their average breaking strength. It was known that ropes manufactured using the old fibre had an average breaking strength of 228.5 kilograms and a standard deviation of 27.3 kilograms. They planned to test the breaking strength of the new ropes using a random sample of forty ropes and also indicated they were prepared to accept a...

    The Federal Reserve Board of Governors recently changed the reporting of its stance on monetary policy from what they termed a "policy bias" to a "balance of risks". A researcher wished to see whether there had been a change in the way financial analysts were interpreting the change in reporting. When the "policy bias" reporting method was used, it was known that only 35% of the Board's decisions were correctly anticipated by analysts in their reports. For the "balance of...

    An economist wants to study the impact of free financial counseling on saving behavior. The economist has a small random sample of people who have been “rolling over” their credit card debt for six months (i.e. they have not been paying the balance on their credit card, and therefore interest charges have been accumulating). All of these people receive financial counseling. The economist will observe whether or not each of them pays off their credit card debt within six months....
