The chlorine residual consumed by 1mg/L is 5 mg/l in general.

So for 0.5mg/l of nitrite require chlorine is equal to

0.5×5

That is equal to 2.5 mg/l of chlorine residues will be consumed by 0.5 mg/l of nitrite.
