Read the following scenario and explain what power issues may arise. What factors influence statistical power?

A researcher is exploring differences between men and women on ‘number of different recreational drugs used.’ The researcher collects data on a sample of 50 men and 50 women between the ages of 18-25. Each participant is asked ‘how many different recreational drugs have you tried in your life?’ The IV is gender (male/female) and the DV is ‘number of reported drugs.’

Answer #1

Power usually dismisses the false invalid hypothesis. In this scenario, the sample size is same for both men and women. Power issues that may arise would be of a hypothesis that the consumption of drugs by men is more than women. The number of reported drugs for men would be more than women. In this scenario, the significance level is high, therefore it may result in rise of power. Also that the sample size is greater, it will result in greater power.
The factors that would influence statistical power would be the sample size, independent and dependent variables, the difference in group mean. Here the sample size is - 100 (50 Men, 50 Women), IV - Gender, DV - number of reported drugs.

Researchers at the Women’s Health Collaborative in Washington, DC, have conducted meta-analyses of studies into women’s attitudes about mammograms. Their findings show a trend since 1995 in attitudes. They wonder if generational differences among research samples produced the trend line. To begin research into this possibility, they plan to sample women of different ages, taking care to avoid surveying women who are related or friends. Using random selection with technology of telephone-dialing software, the researchers survey 400 women between 40...
