Answer #1

Solution:

Given:

Green peas = 431

Yellow Peas = 152

thus n = 431 + 152 = 583

Part a) Construct a 95% confidence interval .

Formula:

(-E <p< p + E)

where

2 = 0.2607

and

E = Z X P * (1-P)

We need to find zc value for c=95% confidence level.

Find Area = ( 1 + c ) / 2 = ( 1 + 0.95) /2 = 1.95 / 2 = 0.9750

Look in z table for Area = 0.9750 or its closest area and find z value.

17 .00 .01 .02 ,03 ,04 ,05 06 .07 .08 .09 | 0.0 5000 15040 .5080 5120 .5160 5199 5139 5279 5319 .5359 10.1 .5398 5438 .5478 .

Area = 0.9750 corresponds to 1.9 and 0.06 , thus z critical value = 1.96

That is : Zc = 1.96

thus

E = Z X P * (1-P)

E = 1.96 x 0.2607 x (1 – 0.2607) 583

E = 1.96 V 0.2607 x 0.7393 583

E = 1.96 X V0.00033061

E = 1.96 x 0.0181827

E = 0,035638

thus

(-E <p< p + E)

(0.2607 – 0.035638 <p < 0.2607 + 0.035638)

(0.225082 <p < 0.296358)

(0.225 <p < 0.296)

Part b)
No, the confidence interval includes 0.25, so the true percentage could easily equal to 25%
