Two Questions in regards to extractions:

1) A slightly polar compound partitions itself between ether and water phases. The distribution constant (Kd) value is 2.5 in favor of the ether solvent. What simple procedure could you use to increase this Kd value?

2) If the value of Kd is 0.5 for the distribution of a compound between pentane and water, and equal volumes of the two solvents are used, use equation 2 o determine how many extractions of the aqueous layer will be required to remove at least 90% of the compound. Show your work.

Construct a flow chart describing the seperation of the mixture and the isolation of each compound in this experiment. (Lab steps/procedures includes for reference) 4. Construct a flow chart describing the separation of the mixture and the isolation of each compound in this experiment. A commonly used method of separating a mixture of organic compounds is known as liquid-liquid extraction. Most reactions of organic compounds require extraction at some stage of product purification. In this experiment you will use extraction...

can you pleas help me making a Flow chart for separation a mixture of trans-cinnamic acid, 4-phenylphenol, and nicotinamide by extraction? thank you Procedure Your mission is to separate a mixture of trans-cinnamic acid, 4-phenylphenol, and nicotinamide by extraction. Start by dissolving/suspending two grams of the mixture in approximately 50 mL of diethyl ether. (Caution: Diethyl ether is extremely flammable! Extract the ether twice with -25 mL of 5% HCl and then twice with -25 mL 5% sodium bicarbonate. It...

i need help with post questions, thanks Product Isolation After stirring the reaction for 5 minutes and allowing the reaction mixture to cool (the reaction can be exothermic), remove the Claisen head from the conical vial. Slowly add 3 M HCl(aq) drop-wise. The solid may need to be broken up with a stirring rod or a pipet. Continue to add acid until the aqueous phase (bottom layer) tests positive with pH paper. Extractions can be done using the conical funnel...

Exercise 2 Separation of a Mixture Based on Acid-Base Properties One purpose of this exercise is to learn how to use a separatory funnel to extract a single component away from other compounds in solution. To do so, we will apply the principles of solubility and acid-base behavior you’re seeing in class. One of the compounds is neutral in the acid-base sense. It has no ability to either donate or accept a proton from an aqueous solution, and will remain...

Organic chemistry post-lab question: "Why is important to add the alkyl halide dropwise in your reaction? (Hint: your reaction is not heated, but you still need a water-cooled condenser!)" Please answer in detail! Here is a copy of the experiment, thank you! The Grignard reaction is an important synthetic process by which a carbon-carbon bond is formed. Magnesium metal is first reacted with an organic halide. The resultant organo-magnesium halide (Grignard reagent) is then combined with a carbonyl compound, ultimately...
