Question

A: The index of refraction for blue light of wavelength 470 nm in a glass sample is 1.678 and for red light of wavelength 695 nm it is 1.638 If a beam containing these two colours has an angle of incidence with the glass of 30.0, what is the angle between the two beams inside the glass?

Answer #1

Question 1) Given , blue light wavelength = 470 nm

Refractive index = 1.678

For red light ,

Wavelength = 695 nm

Refractive index = 1.638

So, sin(30)= 0.5 which is greater than 0.5/1.638 = 0.3052,

Now , sin^-1(0.3052) = 17.77°

Also , 0.5/1.678= 0.298, sin^-1(0.298) = 17.34°

Therefore , angle between the two beams = 17.77° - 17.34° = 0.43°
