Most people are irrational at least some of the time. Jamie, for instance, is irrational if and only if he is upset. Marcie, on the other hand, is rational if and only if she is upset. But Jamie and Marcie both have a special kind of rationality: each, whenever rational, speaks truly, and each, whenever irrational, speaks falsely. This afternoon, one of them said, “We’re both being irrational right now.” The other responded, “No, actually, we’re both quite rational at the moment.” When they uttered the above sentences, one of them was upset and the other was not upset.

a. Which one was upset, Jamie or Marcie?

b. Which one said, “We’re both being irrational right now”? Was that true, or false?

c. Which one said, “No, actually, we’re both quite rational at the moment”? Was that true, or false?

One way behavioral economists are responding to this is by setting up ways for...
