  1. Population growth results from a balance between the rate of birth and the rate of death in a population. For a hypothetical species of tree in a forest, make a list of natural factors that would affect the “birth rate.” Do the same factors affect the death rate?

Answer #1

The factors that affects birth rate are

  • Suitable climate for reproduction and development - if the tree propagate through water, if there is adequate rain it would be helpful for better reproduction and development.
  • Availability of sunlight - amount of sunlight required by each species is different. Every species require adequate sunlight for growth and development
  • Availability of other natural resources
  • Competition among the population - if there is limited resources, it's affects the birth rate of the species
  • Seed germination percentage of the tree -. The rate of seed that germinate to total seeds produced is seed germination percentage. It plays a key role in rate of birth
  • Dormancy of seed - some seeds germinate with in a week of dispersal. Some takes years. It also affects the rate of birth.
  • Attack by wild animals - usually seeds get damaged by wildlife animals. It also affects growth and development of the seedlings.

Some of the factors like sunlight, availability of natural resources, competition among population etc affects the death rate.

Other factors includes allelopathic effects, natural disasters, natural aging of species etc affect birth rate.

    1. Single Species Growth Consider a single population where the per capita birth rate declines as the population size grows. Let N(t) be the population size at time t. Consider the following assumptions: (A1) The environment in which the species lives (including the climate, other species and the availability of resources like food, etc.) remains constant. (A2) The per capita birth rate is for some b>0. (A3) The per capita death rate is a constant d > 0. Note: This...
