Long Island Sound is a tidal estuary of the Atlantic ocean off the north-eastern coast of the USA.

The most abundant species in the benthic region of the island are green crabs, summer flounders, black sea bass, sponges and snails [ based on the data provided].

Small crustaceans and arthropods are likely to play an important role in maintaining species diversity in the region. This is so because they grow abundantly and form the diet of most of the other animals found in the zone. They feed on seeweeds which grow in abundance on rocks on the sea floor as well in the regions between high tide and low tide.

The benthic zone is one of the most productive biological systems in the world. Along the Long Island Sound, they produce three to seven tonns per acre a year of vegetation. This directly contributes to the great finfish and shellfish production of the sound.
