A gas that absorbs and releases radiant energy within the bounds of thermal infrared energy is referred to as a greenhouse gas. In simpler words, they trap heat in the atmosphere, by letting the sunlight pass through, but preventing the heat to escape. Besides CO2, there are many man-made (anthropogenic) greenhouse gases such as methane, Nitrous oxide (N2O), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and fluorinated gases such as the hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).

Higher methane atmospheric concentrations are caused by agricultural activities by men such as the use of manure, vented subsurface landfill emissions, etc. Also, the use of fertilizers can cause an increase in nitrous oxide (N2O) concentration in the atmosphere. The fluorinated gases (F gases) which are even more harmful than N2O are emitted from various industrial processes. In short, the major anthropogenic greenhouse gases can be enumerated as,

1) Carbon dioxide

2) Methane

3) Nitrous oxide (N2O)

4) Fluorinated gases: Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), & Perfluorocarbons (PFCs)
