The traditional view of conflict resolution was prevalent in the 1930s till 1950s. At this time the view of the organizations was that conflicts are unproductive and dysfunctional in nature. As a result, conflicts should be avoided. It identified that the main of reason for conflict were shortcomings in various management practices. For example, poor communication gives rise to conflicts.
The human relations view of conflict resolution was popularized from 1940s to 1970s. The view considered that conflicts cannot be avoided and must be accepted. It provides basis that even though conflicts may cause disturbances in the short term, it is beneficial for organization in the long run as it creates a situation of competition.
Both the views deals with different approaches to conflict management. Both of them agrees that there will be conflict at workplace and they need to be tackled accordingly. The first view takes the method of avoidance as conflict management. However, the view attempts to use collaboration and competition as methods of conflict management. The objective of both the views is the same.
