1. Semiconductors for which the minimum of the conduction band does not occur at the same wavevector as the maximum of the valence band, then they are known to have a smaller absorption coefficient that's why they are not used in light emitting devices.

2. Direct band semiconductors comes up in a design of multi junction solar cells. Solar cells have higher band semiconductors as we move deeper into wafer sothat they can absorb both low as well as high energy photons efficiently.
