Answer #1

If a building resonates at a frequency which is close to a principal frequency of the ground motion of an earthquake, it will produce more shaking in the building than if the frequencies were more different because of resonance. the amplitude of oscillations is more at resonance, so there will be more loss and destruction if the natural frequency of oscillation of building is equal to the earthquake frequencies. so to avoid such cases, we design the buildings in such a way that the natural frequncy of oscillation is much greater than earthquake frequencies.
