This is because of opposite charges of simple stain and bacterial cell surface.

Bacterial cell walls are negatively charged and simple stains are positively charged. Stain molecules are entrapped between the meshwork of cell wall of bacteria and remain associated there due to interaction between positively charged stain molecules and negatively charged molecules present in the cell wall of bacteria.
