The memory modules used in servers are usually ECC. Where as, 'Desktop RAMs' are un-buffered and non-ECC.

Now, ECC RAMs will have multiple of 9 memory chips and non-ECC RAMs will have multiple of 8 memory chips on it.

From the figure you can see that 'A' has 8 chips on it, indiciating it as Desktop RAM. And the second one has 9 chips on it, indicating it as server memory module.
