Question

3, A tank contains pure ethane at a temperature of 100°F Can the ethane be liquefied (at any pressure)? 4. Pure propane is to be pipelined as a liquid. The maximum expected summertime temperature in the pipeline is 80°F. What is the minimum pressure that can be allowed in the pipe line?

Answer #1

3. Critical temp of ethane = 305 K

Given temp = 100 F = 311 K

Since T>Tc, for liquifaction we necessarily need to reduce temperature as well as increase pressure.

LIQUIFACTION IS NOT POSSIBLE AT THE SAME TEMPERATURE EVEN ON INCREASING PRESSURE

4. Minimum allowable pressure = Vapor pressure at 80 F

Since if the pressure reduces further, propane will vaporize and might cause cavitation or even pipe failure.

Vapor pressure of Propane at 80F = 26.67 C = 300K

From Antoine equation, we have

log10(VP(bar)) = 4.53678 - 1149.36/(T(in K) + 24.906)

Thus, VP = 9.9373 bar

Minimum pressure = 9.9373 bar = 144.13 psi

A 1-mº rigid tank contains 100 kg R-134a at a temperature of 16 °C. A valve on top of the tank is opened, and saturated vapor is allowed to escape through a throttle to a collector system at 100 kPa. During the process the temperature inside the tank remains at 16 °C by heat transfer from the 20 °C surroundings. The valve is closed when no more liquid remains inside the tank.
