If we were to measure the relaxation time of a muscle after undergoing tetanus compared to the relaxation time of the same muscle after undergoing a twitch, we would find that the relaxation time after tetanus is much longer. Provide a logical physiological reason why this is the case.

Answer #1

The relaxation period of a muscle is the time during which Ca2+ are returned to the sarcoplasmic reticulum by active transport.

The relaxation rate of fast skeletal muscle at the end of tetanic stimulation critically depends upon tetanus duration.

The relaxation time of muscle after undergoing tetanus is much longer than the relaxation time of twitch. The rate of contraction in tetanus case is very high than that of twitch. Since twitch is a sudden and short or convulsive movement the rate of contraction is low. Since tetanus have the high contraction time, the rate of relaxation will would be slower. It takes time to a large amount of calcium in the cytoplasm to be  taken up by sarcoplsmic reticulum.

In our Thin-Layer Chromatography Lab, we were asked to determine the components of Excedrin by analyzing the development of aspirin, acetaminophen, and caffeine on a TLC plate and compare it to Excedrin's development. Pure ethyl acetate was used as the solvent, and each analyte was mixed with 95% ethanol. Unfortunately, our professor suspected that our TLC plates were old/deteriorated as every group was unable to detect CAFFEINE or ASPIRIN with a UV lamp, but ACETAMINOPHEN and EXCEDRIN were easily detected...

Recall how we saw in class that if we add a total time derivative of a function g(g; t) on configuration space to the Lagrangian then the equations of motion were unaffected, i.e. the new Lagrangian gives the same Euler-Lagrange equations as the original Lagrangian L. The reason this worked was that the action only shifted by a boundary term, which doesn't affect the extremization procedure We have also seen that if q is a cyclic coordinate, meaning aL/aq0, then...
