Describe organization and divisions within the geologic time scale as a system. Do not describe each division, but rather how and why the geologic time scale exists as it does today.

Given a baseball-sized specimen of a volcanic rock from the Paleozoic, how would we determine the age of that rock?

The geological time scale is a scale used to divide the whole time from the beginning of earth that's from the time of formation of earth which is approximately 4.5 billion years ago. It's divided into eons which is the longest unit of GTS, after this eons are divided into eras, then eras into periods, then periods into epochs and than epochs into ages.

The best method than can be used to age the volcanic rock is by using the radiometric method of age calculation which uses the half life of radioactive atom and concentration of parent and daughter atom to calculate the exact age of sample as volcanic rocks have zircon which have uranium - 235 or uranium - 238 which can be used for radioactive dating.
