Technology is not neutral. The IT Industry grew primarily because it is not neutral. Bill Gates could drop out form Harvard to start Microsoft because he knew he was taking no risks at all, because he had the skill of software engineering. He believed that software engineering will always have jobs precisely because it is customizable. Customizable software tailor-made for people and organizations was the main reason this industry has been able to flourish.

However one can argue especially after the advent of the internet and the cultural shift in expectation that software like other consumer goods should be "free". Nothing in the world is free. Software is not neutral. "Free" software will always find ways of generating revenue in other ways such as creating addicting technologies by taking advantage of Ph.D. Psychologists who helped bring the casino and gambling principles to web applications like Facebook and Google, and by selling personal data generated by so many users who did not have the time to go through the terms of service conditions.
