Answer #1

We have same hardness and same cold-worked percent for both the rods implies the diameter change will be equal for both the rods since there are no other factors that differ their change

Hence the diameter of rod A is directly proportional to the diameter of rod B

implies their initial diameter to final diameter ratio is equal

implies

(initial diameter of rod A)/(final diamter of rod A)

= (initial diamter of rod B)/(final diameter of rod B)

implies 32/22 = 24/x

On cross multiplying we get

32*x = 24*22

32x = 528

x = 528/32

x = 16.5

Therefore final diameter of rod B = 16.5 mm

    A cylindrical rod of 1040 steel having originally 11.4 mm in diameter is cold-worked by drawing (i.e. pulling through a die with a hole smaller than the original rod cross section). The circular cross section will be maintained during deformation. The deformed steel is desired to have tensile strength in excess of 825 MPa and ductility of at least 12% EL. The final diameter must be 8.9 mm. Explain how this may be accomplished.

    A cylindrical rod of copper having an initial diameter of 16 mm is to be cold worked by drawing such that the cross-sectional area is reduced. It is required to have a cold-worked yield stress of at least 200 MPa and a ductility in excess of 12%; in addition, the final diameter of 11.3 mm is required.
