1. Consider in this problem a comparison of the Lewis structure and of the valence-bond (VB) description of the electronic structure and bonding in the nitrite anion (NO2?). The following sequence covers the usual sequence of steps that you should be able to carry out for any polyatomic molecule:

(a) Draw a Lewis electron-dot structure; use it to determine the bond order between each pair of atoms, the presence of any lone pairs, and then determine the formal charges.

(b) From the Lewis structure, determine the coordination number (CN) for each of the atoms, and then determine what type of hybrid AOs are used by the atoms.

(c) Determine how the hybrid AOs are overlapped pairwise to make the ? bonding framework for the molecule.

(d) Determine the nature of the ? bonding in the molecule, if present.

(e) Draw a stick-figure structure that shows the geometry of the molecule, and then indicate the presence of any lone pairs. Then determine the formal charges on each atom.

(f) On the stick-figure structure, indicate the bond angles expected from the corresponding ideal VSEPR shape; also, discuss any deviations that would be expected due to the presence of lone pairs, if any.

(g) If pertinent, draw the set of resonance structures that contribute significantly to the structure and then draw the average structure.
