In the atomic model the electrons are restricted to move around a single atom but in case of molecules the electron moves in the combined effect of atoms. At T=0 the outer most electron which is loosely bounded to the nucleus called the Valence electron, such electrons will constitute Valence band but there are some empty levels that constitutes conduction band.As temperature increases theelectrons of valence band will jump in the unoccupied levels of the band called conduction band.
