Using the T-S diagram we found that in a pressurized water reactor about 450 BTU turned the turbines per pound of this secondary system fluid (steam). This secondary fluid is steam that goes from the steam generators, through the turbines, generating 1200 MW, and the steam is then condensed to cool water at about 100 F to be sent to the condensate pump. The condensate pump will pump this water from atmospheric pressure to 1050 psia to be sent back to the steam generator.

This reactor generated 1200 MW of electricity from the 450btu/pound of water, how many pounds of water were being circulated per second through the turbines?

Answer #1

enthalpy change across turbine, h1-h2 = 450 BTU/lb

= 1046.7 kJ/kg

Power developed by turbine, P = 1200*e3 kW

but, P = m * ( h1-h2)

therefore, mass of steam/second, m = (1200e3)/(1046.7)

= 1146.46 Kg/s
