A rivet is a permanent mechanical fastener. Before being installed, a rivet consists of a smooth cylindrical shaft calles shank with a head on one end. The end opposite to the head is called the tail.

1. Diameter. It refers to the gross diameter of rivet or the diameter of the rivet hole.Normally it is more than the rivet diameter as after installing a rivet it's nominal diameter increases and becomes equal to the gross diameter.

2. Diameter of rivet. The actual diameter of the rivet cylindrical shaft in its normal condition is called nominal diameter of the rivet or diameter of rivet.

3. Pitch. This is the distance between two centers of the consecutive rivets in a single row. Pitch is denoted by p.
