Two years ago the company developed a website and began selling its products over the Internet. Website sales have exceeded the company’s expectations, and management is now considering strategies to increase sales even further. Below are the description of the data collected. What type of data is Browser, Time and Amount Spent? What is the Level of Measurement for each?

Customers: the control number of customers that were part of the sample

Day: the day of the week each transaction was made

Browser: the type of browser customers used

Time (min): the time in minutes spent on the website

Page viewed: the number of website pages viewed per visit

Amount spent ($): the dollar amount spent per transaction

Problem statement: A table containing information about sales of chocolates are provided and we have to understand the data type of each of the variables.

Given: A data table with transaction information of 50 customers purchasing chocolates.

(A) What type of data is "browser"?

Solution:- browser data is a categorical data. We classify browser data as categorical because each of the browsers fall in to different categories. A categorical data is a data type where the variable can take only a set of predefined possible values. For example, in this case, browser can take on only "internet explorer", "Firefox" and "other" categories. Browser variable cannot take any value other than these three categories. Cases where variables can take only a fixed number of values (here 3 for browser) are called categorical variables.

(B) What type of data is "time"?

solution: Time here refers to amount of time spent on the webpage. This is a numerical data and specifically a continuous data. We can conclude that it is a continuous data as this measure of time spent on webpage can take infinite number of values within a range. For example, person A may spend 10 min on webpage, person B may spend 10.06 minutes while person C may spend 10.034 minutes. So this variable can take infinite number of values within a range.

(C) What type of data is "Amount spent"?

solution: Amount spent here refers to amount of Dollars spent per transaction. This is a numerical data and specifically a continuous data. We can conclude that it is a continuous data as this measure of Dollar spent can take infinite number of values within a range. For example, person A may spend 100 Dollars on webpage, person B may spend 100.06 Dollars while person C may spend 10.034 Dollars. So this variable can take infinite number of values within a range.

(D) Levels of measurement

Browser: Browser variable is "nominal". Nominal variable is a variable where we can't declare one category is better/lower compared to other category. For example, in no way ,we can make a statement that Firefox is better than Internet explorer, at least based on the data given.

Time: Time when measured in minutes falls into the category of ratio scale. We can conclude it to be a ratio scale because, it has an absolute zero and also when we find the difference between two time measurements it has a meaning. For example 6min transaction is twice as long as 3 min transaction and difference between 10min to 9min or 9min to 8min is 1 minute only and this difference is meaningful.

Amount spent: Amount spent when in dollars falls into the category of ratio scale. We can conclude it to be a ratio scale because, it has an absolute zero (zero dollars=no money charged) and also when we find the difference between two dollar amounts has a meaning. For example 16 Dollar transaction is twice as expensive as 8 Dollar transaction and difference between 16 Dollar to 13 Dollar or 9 Dollar to 6 Dollar is 3 Dollars only and this difference is meaningful.
