With the formalized comes standards and pre-defined benchmark point. Standardized activities and formalized procedures give clear expectations of behavior to the employees. Also they provide criteria for making decisions to employees. With the exact and point-to-point methods (i.e. procedures) and guidelines, one can replace the managerial oversight. Formalized procedures make the processes very efficient. Centralization depicts the extent to which the decisions are taken at a central location.

Though beneficial, these procedures do have some disadvantages. There is a chance that companies implementing the formalized procedure may become very reluctant or less responsive for any change and hence thereby less and less proficient in its operations. When many layers of operations come into existence in any organization then it the processing of information tends to take longer than otherwise. This is so because this layered organization tends to start developing a bureaucratic inertia. Centralization may not be able to tap the varied skills and resources.
