Cobalt Synthesis Calculations:

Can someone help me find the answers to fill in the table on the left (and show your work if you can)? I am having trouble understanding what I need to do. Thanks!

Answer #1

According to the balanced chemical equation,2 mol of complex is produced on rxn of :

1) 2 mol Co(NO3)2.6H2O

2)10 mol NH4OH

3)1 mol H2O2

4)2 mol HNO3

As Co(NO3)2.6H2O is present in the least amount among the reactants ,so it may be the limiting reactant. To verify this fact, calculate the amount of other reactants it will react.

2 mol Co(NO3)2.6H2O reacts with 1mol H2O2,so 0.012 mol Co(NO3)2.6H2O will react with 0.012/2=0.006 mol H2O2

2 mol Co(NO3)2.6H2O reacts with 10mol NH4OH,so 0.012 mol Co(NO3)2.6H2O will react with 0.012*10=0.12 mol NH4OH

2 mol Co(NO3)2.6H2O reacts with 2 mol HNO3 ,so 0.012 mol Co(NO3)2.6H2O will react with 0.012 mol HNO3

Thus,Co(NO3)2.6H2O is the limiting reactant, and rest are excess reactant. Thus ,0.012 mol of Co(NO3)2.6H2O will produce equal moles of the complex

mass of complex formed =0.012mol*molar mass of the complex=0.012 mol*(348.116 g/mol)=4.117g

Theoretical yield based on limiting reagent=4.117g
