A bullet is shot at a block that is initially at rest that is hanging from a cord. The bullet has a mass of 20 grams and and an initial speed of 650 m/s. If the block has a mass of 5kg and the bullet inside the block after the collision, what is the maximum height the block can swing after the collision?

Answer #1

here,

the mass of bullet , m = 20 g = 0.02 kg

the initial speed of bullet , u = 650 m/s

the mass of block , M = 5 kg

let the final speed of bullet and block after the collison be v

using conservation of momentum

m * u = ( m + M) * v

0.02 * 650 = ( 0.02 + 5) * v

solving for v

v = 2.59 m/s

the maximum height the block can swing , hm = v^2 / 2g

hm = 2.59^2 /(2*9.81) m

hm = 0.34 m

the maximum height of the block is 0.34 m

    Q1. A bullet (1 g) is shot into a pendulum mass while it is hanging straight down (0.8kg). Just before impact with the pendulum, the bullet has speed 600m/s. The bullet-pendulum combination then swings together in a circular arc to a maximum angle of 0.2 rad.    Find the speed of the bullet-pendulum combination right after the bullet becomes embedded (you can assume that this happens quickly enough that the combination has not yet had a chance to rise). What...

    A bullet with mass m = 40 grams traveling at v = 400 m/s strikes a block of wood suspended from a ceiling with a massless cord. The collision last for 15 milliseconds, and after it is completed the bullet embeds itself into the block. Then, the combined system rises to a maximum height has its swings upward as shown. The mass of the wooden block is M=5.0kg and the length of the cord is L = 1.25 m. Calculate...

    The ballistic pendulum is a simple device—the pendulum part consists of a wooden block, which has a mass of 860. grams, hanging from a string. The block is initially at rest. However, a bullet with a mass of 18.0 grams is fired at the block. The bullet embeds itself in the block, and the bullet and block then oscillate back and forth on the string, pendulum style, after the collision. Just before impact with the block, the bullet's velocity is...

    A bullet of mass 8 g is fired into a 1.2 kg ballistic pendulum (a block of wood acting as the pendulum bob of a thin metal arm attached to a low friction pivot point) that is initially at rest. The bullet exits the block of wood with a speed of 180 m/s and the wooden block swings from its lowest point to a maximum height of 9.2 cm above that location.
