The ballistic pendulum is a simple device—the pendulum part consists of a wooden block, which has a mass of 860. grams, hanging from a string. The block is initially at rest. However, a bullet with a mass of 18.0 grams is fired at the block. The bullet embeds itself in the block, and the bullet and block then oscillate back and forth on the string, pendulum style, after the collision. Just before impact with the block, the bullet's velocity is 205 m/s, directed entirely horizontally. Use g = 9.80 m/s2.

(a) Determine the speed of the block + bullet system immediately after the collision.
m/s

(b) Determine the maximum height, measured from the level where the block starts, that the block + bullet rise to after the collision.

A bullet of mass 8 g is fired into a 1.2 kg ballistic pendulum (a block of wood acting as the pendulum bob of a thin metal arm attached to a low friction pivot point) that is initially at rest. The bullet exits the block of wood with a speed of 180 m/s and the wooden block swings from its lowest point to a maximum height of 9.2 cm above that location. 3. The ballistic pendulum is a device used to measure the speed of a projectile, such as a bullet. The projectile, of mass m, is fired into a large block of mass M, which is suspended like a pendulum. As a result of the collision, the pendulum and projectile together swing up to a maximum height h. simple way to measure the speed of a bullet is with a ballistic pendulum, which consists of a wooden block of mass m into which a bullet of mass m, is shot. The block is suspended from two cables, each of length L. Assume that the time the bullet takes to come to rest (that is, the bullet is moving at the same speed as the block) is negligibly Small. A ballistic pendulum is a device for measuring bullet speeds. One of the simplest versions consists of a block of wood hanging from two long cords. (Two cords are used so that the bottom face of the block remains parallel to the floor as the block swings upward.) .013-kg bullet traveling at 320 m/s hits a 3.0-kg ballistic pendulum. However, the block is not thick enough for this bullet, and the bullet passes through the block, exiting with one-third of...

In a ballistic pendulum, a bullet of mass m is fired into a stationary hanging block of mass M. On impact, the bullet is trapped inside the block, which then slides up to a maximum height of h = 4.06 cm. If the mass of the block (M) is 4.7 times larger than the mass of the bullet (m), determine the speed v which the bullet must have had prior to impact.

Problem 3 A "ballistic pendulum" is a device (now largely obsolete, but very useful in its day) to measure the speed of a bullet as it hits a target. Let the target be a block of wood suspended from a string, as in the figure below. When the bullet hits, it is embedded in the wood, and together they swing, like a pendulum, to some maximum height h. The question is, how do you find the initial speed of the...

Virtual Lab: Ballistic Pendulum Introduction The ballistic pendulum was invented by Benjamin Robins in 1742 as a device mainly designed to accurately measure the speed of fast traveling projectiles (bullets or cannon balls), relying only on measurements of mass and distance, without measurements of time. Knowing the mass of the projectile, estimates of its momentum and kinetic energy could also be made. Although the ballistic- pendulum method has lost its practical importance to more modern methodologies, it was used for...
