The basic cell wall contains a peptidoglycan layer and a polymer consisting of NAG (N-acetyl glucosamine) and NAM (N-acetyl muramic acid) along with amino acid chains. The NAM and NAG units are arranged alternatively to form a carbohydrate backbone, this is known as glycan part, and the rows of these units are linked together by polypeptide bonds, this is known as peptide portion.
