Question
Circle only the most acidic hydrogen in each of the following molecules

7) (20) Using your newly accumulated knowledge, complete the following acid- base reactions with the understanding that the anion in each case acts as the base to accept the most acidic hydrogen from the other species (you will have to determine what hydrogen is the most acidic). Be sure to clearly indicate the direction of the equilibrium by drawing the appropriate arrows. Try to do this without consulting a table of pka values.

Answer #1

Solution :-

Following image shows the hydrogens circled that are most acidic hydrogens in the molecule.

The middle -CH2 hydrogens are most acidic because they are flanked with two carbonyl groups. Carbonyl groups are electron withdrawing groups therefore it increases the aciditiy of the middle CH2 hydrogens. The equilibrium favors the forward reaction.

The carbanion formed after the removal of the hydrogen by base is more stable because it can have two resonsnace structures with two carbonyl groups. This makes the middle CH2 hydrogens more acidic.

0 Hydrogens circledin red color are most acidichydrogens in this molecule Folowing mechanism step shows the deprotonation of the acidic hydrogens by the base OH 0 0 ㄣ
