Compare the advantages and disadvantages of the nuclear versus extended family.

• A nuclear family is one which has only parents living with their children whereas an extended family is like a huge joint family having uncles,aunts,grandparents,cousins etc.
• Bothfamily structures have their own advantages and disadvantages.
• One of the advantage of a nuclear family is,there is privacy and no intrusion by other family members,which is highly possible in an extended families.Lack of personal space can become bothersome in extended families.
• Another advantage if nuclear family is dual income,i.e. when both parents are working there is financial stability and also providing children with confidence to fend for themselves when they grow up.They understand the importance of being financially independent early one,when they see their parents working hard.These families are more resilient and strong in facing obstacles.
• This is not really possible in extended families,as such families are usually running businesses,in which the younger children and women of the family are financially dependent on the male members.Too much dependency can make children develop low self confidence and become lazy.
• One disadvantage of nuclear family is that,it can become isolated and depressing since there are not many members to talk to and share conversations with as one might not visit their relatives too often,this is where extended families score.Having different generations in the same house,is a celebration in itself and also encourages togetherness and provides a sense of security.
• Nuclear families also provide a small support system compared to extended families.Emergency situations, such as an accident or even a time of illness, can be disadvantageous as it may leave small nuclear families in crisis.Extended families will be able to provide immediate support.
