Optical fiber is a device which can sent a electromagnetic signal withot any energy loss, it works on the concept of total internal reflection in which light incident on the boundary of optically dense to rare medium. in optical fiber we put tiny glass in a cylinder and cylinder has coating, which has less refractive index then the glass for total internal reflection.

So for total internal reflection we use relatively high refractive index glass.
