How are dislocations involved in plastic deformation?
Dislocatons are a type of linear defects in localized regions in crystals wherein, the atoms are out of position. On application of stress, excess shear can be transferred from one side of the crystal to the other by the motions of these dislocations. This is known as slip which results in plastic deformation.
