Horizontal gene transfer ( HGT) is a way for bacteria to acquire resistance to antibiotics.
During a process called conjugation, two cells in close distance from each other are connected through a structure called a pilus
DNA in the form of a plasmid is transferred through that pilus from one cell to the other.
Now both cells have resistance to antibiotics.
Horizontal gene transfer is the transmission of pieces of DNA between relatively unrelated organism. It is the main mechanism of antibiotic resistance. Genes that inactivates the antibiotics are often transferred, leading to the transmission of antibiotics resistance from one species to another.
The principal mechanism involved in gene transfer are:
Transformation: Uptake of free DNA
Transduction: Plasmid mediated transfer
Conjugation: Phage mediated transfer
