A single ion channel is selectively permeable to K+ and has a resistance of 1.0 GΩ. During an experiment the channel is open for approximately 1.1 ms while the voltage across the channel is maintained at +72 mV with a patch clamp. How many K+ ions travel through the channel?

Answer #1

As V= IR. I = 72mV/1Gohm. Hence current flow is 7.2×10^-8 A.

Charge flown = current×time. Hence total charge flown is 7.92×10^-11 C.

Each K+ ion contain 1 proton. Hence you can calculate number of K+ ions flown.

Ans is 4.94×10^8.

IMAGE K shows single-channel recordings from an ionotropic receptor, that were made using the cell-attached patch-clamp configuration. All ion concentrations are as with normal neurons, and ENa = +60 mV, EK = -80 mV, and ECl = -70 mV. In these traces, the membrane potential is being held at -60 mV. In the top trace, the experimenter stimulated the presynaptic neuron with no drug present, and in the bottom trace they had applied a drug. Unfortunately, the experimenter forgot which...
