Loss of electrons is oxidation, gain of electrons is reduction. Catabolic pathways (breakdown of molecules) gain energy by oxidising (make them loss electrons) the organic molecules, these electrons are captured by oxygen molecules by means of a pathway in which the passage of electrons charge an energy storage unit such as ATP (Adenosine triphosphate).
